Freedom and service

A truly moving and inspiring Heavenletter. I feel like I should apologize for daring to break the mood of love and appreciation that it creates, but I am going to selfishly bring up a personal concern about a phrase that appears in a lot of letters.

God says: “You are in service to me.” This phrase sounds comforting and full of promise, but also carries a twinge of uncertainty every time I read it. The uncertainty seems attached to visions of The Inquisition and modern terrorists killing in God’s name. It also can have a feeling of a loss of freedom and being bound in servitude.

Is this just me? Do I have some sort of blindness about this issue? This seems like one of those dilemmas that are hard to understand and we just have to take on faith, but I never quite know for sure. When I reason through it, I have come to accept that an awareness of God’s Will lies at the deepest level in our heart. The key may be our Oneness with Him. Could it be that learning to serve him is what we are looking for in all our searching, but we view it only very dimly and call it by other names?

Perhaps what it comes down to is that, while free will is one of God’s greatest gifts, we are destined to learn that our most fulfilling choice is always the most giving and most loving.

I’d love to hear what others think about this……..Chuck
