Dear Chuck, I think this is an important part of the answer – only perhaps too reasonable for a complete and fulfilling answer.
God says in many different ways: "Your serving Me is in accepting My love and passing it on."
I think that all other forms of "serving", including the clearly misguided ones you mentioned but also subtler varieties, are contrived and therefore, in the final analysis, self-serving. If it has a big and blinking neon sign saying, "This is service to God", it probably isn't.

Days ago I had a dream about a Tsunami wave on the beach, and then, as I read a Heavenletter letter from the Cosmic Generator, I read of a Tsunami wave of love that will sweep over the world.
