the birds and the sheep

Dear Michelle,
As a matter of fact I used to take care of sheep - some years ago, when I was a schoolgirl, at my grandparents' farm. (Now I'm a teacher, and I take care of children:) We had a black sheep then, and three white ones, among other animals, of course. I loved them all. Their milk was good, but a meat eater I am not. We didn't put oil on them, as they themselves secreted a special smelling oil, however I used to clean the thorns from their wool, and kiss them...kiss their little noses, their eyes, rub their horns...and they would kiss me back, licking my nose with their soft tongues. They also used to lick each other clean everyday. I took care of geese and other farm animals too, I mean I used to lead them to the pastures where they would get the best food, while I was guarding them. Come to think of it, my grandmother was indeed anointing the ...chickens:) the newly hatched ones have a little bump on their beaks, and grandma used to pour a drop of butter on their beaks, and scratch the hard bump out, so that they would grow up more gentle, with less fighting. My name does indeed mean in a certain language "the flock that has followed", so a lost sheep I am not, Right now I live in the City of Rice, City of Stars, close to the Source of Clouds, next to the Fields of The Sun River, and at the foot of The Great Mountain. I live right here, where the swans come. This place on Earth is in Japan, and isn't this so full of poetry? I love writing poetry, and reading it; life itself seems to be a great poem, with many verses and deep words, so I feel blessed indeed to be able to read and to write in this great book which is also mine; because words of love and friendship are like golden thread in the complex tapestry of life. Why did I write all this? Because it is my intent to send this soft, loving, sweet feeling, with the gentlest hug, to you. With love, AY
