the best you can do at the moment
Beloveds, it is even true that when you withhold love, you, too, are doing the best you can do at the moment. That moment is already past. And now is another moment. From one moment to another, more of the love in your heart can rise to the surface and be available for all including those who, to your mind, may not deserve it. Your true heart goes by different rules. It goes by the rule of love.
I'm sure this is so, dear God, even though I'm not fully seeing it yet. After what has to be considered the greater part of a life of withholding love – or, rather, of unwittingly sacrificing it to suffocating fear and anger – I sure wish We had met earlier, I sure wish I had not been quite so clueless in my many years of spiritual search. The progress made every day seems infinitesimal, the relapses quite impressive. Although I'm not old and wise yet, should anyone ask me about how to come to terms with life, I wouldn't hesitate to answer: "Be intent on love only, and be serious about it; it's a rake raking all the dead leaves of your life into one nice comfortable mound, not dead at all."
